Goodbye 55 Chevy

I bought this car for my husband as a surprise to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the day we met in Port Townsend.  Very cherry and completely redone on the inside with white leather.  He sold it recently to a high school buddy.  Sniff.

Opening Reception - Of Clocks and Crows Exhibit, Arts Council of Snohomish County

Had about ten pieces in the main floor gallery.  This was a very fun September - October exhibit; there were quite a few characters, people and even dogs were dressed up as crows.  Made some new and interesting friends.

Kingston Buccaneers fan

Our son Charlie is on the Kingston Buccaneers basketball jv team and my husband showed his support by asking me to carve a "K" into his hair. We embellished a little with school color for last night's game.

Holidays = time to paint pomegranates!

In honor of the holidays I feel the urge to paint pomegranates. Here's an oil I am currently working on. Now the difficult, nit-picky part -- applying numerous glazes to each tiny pomegranate seed. A way off from being done, but it feels like a good start...

A stand of birches at Bloedel Reserve.

Inspiration

 

Today, a dear friend and I walked Bainbridge Island's Bloedel Reserve. We had the entire frosted landscape to ourselves. The swans were out, nestled amongst many ducks. We stopped at the main house to admire the Christmas decorations, pausing for hot cider in the library. Then off to the poetically lit birch tree stands. The day was lovely and we took many pictures which I hope will inspire future paintings. After that we met other friends at a Bainbridge studio where we paint each Wednesday and were so happy to catch up that we had two tea breaks!

With summer at its peak, the cherry trees in our yard have ripened and are ready for the picking.  I thought these encaustic mixed media paintings I made would go well with the season.

Raggedy Ann

The second of the birdcage dress series, based roughly off of one of my favorite dolls, Raggedy Ann.   I wish I still had the handmade doll my mother made for me when I was a child.   It was interesting trying to figure out how to add on the patches on her dress.  Eventually I used liquid sculpy and pliable sculpy and photo transferred fabric patterns on to them.  More images beneath the link.

Surrogate

I've decided to start a couple of small sculpture series.  I'm interested in birds, nests and eggs within a cage framework. It was reaffirming when I emailed this first sculpture image to my collector list and it sold within 10 minutes. More images beneath the link.

Nyad

In one of my earlier posts I mentioned becoming interested in sculpture.  I am interested in figurative work, this particular piece was quite an engineering feat and I got out of hand with the size. Luckily my mom has a giant oven I was able to bake it in on a bed of polyester fiberfill.  More images beneath the link.

I started painting this subject matter because it was comforting to me at the time. My teenage son was starting to gain more independence and pull away from his over-nurturing mother, which I found rather painful and sudden. I know that things were moving along as nature intended and he was ready, but I wasn't. Once again, painting got me through a difficult period. A lot of love went into these nests and I hope it shows. Some galleries have asked me to do more birds, nests and eggs, so I am thinking about it, but I am pretty hung up on sculpture right now.
