I bought this car for my husband as a surprise to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the day we met in Port Townsend. Very cherry and completely redone on the inside with white leather. He sold it recently to a high school buddy. Sniff.

Today, a dear friend and I walked Bainbridge Island's Bloedel Reserve. We had the entire frosted landscape to ourselves. The swans were out, nestled amongst many ducks. We stopped at the main house to admire the Christmas decorations, pausing for hot cider in the library. Then off to the poetically lit birch tree stands. The day was lovely and we took many pictures which I hope will inspire future paintings. After that we met other friends at a Bainbridge studio where we paint each Wednesday and were so happy to catch up that we had two tea breaks!

The second of the birdcage dress series, based roughly off of one of my favorite dolls, Raggedy Ann. I wish I still had the handmade doll my mother made for me when I was a child. It was interesting trying to figure out how to add on the patches on her dress. Eventually I used liquid sculpy and pliable sculpy and photo transferred fabric patterns on to them. In one of my earlier posts I mentioned becoming interested in sculpture. I am interested in figurative work, this particular piece was quite an engineering feat and I got out of hand with the size. I started painting this subject matter because it was comforting to me at the time. My teenage son was starting to gain more independence and pull away from his over-nurturing mother, which I found rather painful and sudden. I know that things were moving along as nature intended and he was ready, but I wasn't. Once again, painting got me through a difficult period. A lot of love went into these nests and I hope it shows. Some galleries have asked me to do more birds, nests and eggs, so I am thinking about it, but I am pretty hung up on sculpture right now.

The humming bird is the smallest kind of bird in the world. Also because of their feeding style, they are the only birds who are able to hover. Their wings beat at an average of 500 beats a minute to help them stay aloft.

Through the Internet, I made friends with several professional storm chasers that allowed me to use their photos. One of the guys I met is a complete adrenaline junkie, he cage dives with sharks, is the only person who's been inside a live volcano. He actually got married in a volcano and has a show called Angry Planet. He was most definitely an interesting guy.

What is Encaustic?

W H A T I S E N C A U S T I C ?

Encaustic is the very earliest known form of paint, first used by the Greeks over 2000 years ago. The amazing Fayum Mummy Portraits were painted in encaustic by the Greeks in Egypt. They are still fresh and vibrant, and are exhibited today in the world's greatest galleries.

Encaustic painting involves melting, applying, then heat fusing layers of beeswax (resin and pigment can be added). The wax gives an optical depth unique to the medium.

Encaustic has returned from obscurity as modern tools have made the process more practical. Diego Rivera used encaustic in the 1930's on his murals. Jasper Johns is credited with the current renaissance of encaustic fine art with his work that began in the 1950's.

"Why paint in a process-intensive medium that's over 2000 years old?" is rarely asked. That answer is a given: luminosity, rich surface, the beauty of the wax.

Carrie Goller interprets this ancient medium into very contemporary work, creating paintings with brilliant luminosity, as well as some with a rich, delicate opalescence. Maintaining their freshness and intensity, they will not darken or yellow. Because of the protective nature of wax they are impervious to moisture and need not be varnished or put under glass.

Observation: Maybe there is a trend of investing in art for children lately. Three of my pieces sold in February 2006 were for children. One was Dragonfly Dance, an encaustic triptych which some collectors bought for their one year old daughter "who needs nothing but your painting" and two others were encaustic koi fish for a 10 year old who wanted them for his birthday. Interesting.

New Studio

When I had taken over our family room with 8 portrait commissions in the works, my very sweet husband had a studio built for me on our property overlooking two beautiful ponds with waterfalls which he designs and installs (see photos below, also website: www.wedoponds.com). Thank you Jeff! I now have an enchanting studio (with great north light and cable!). I will try to keep the family room clear.
